Kewtech KT77 not keeping the date/time

If your Kewtech KT77 PA Tester (PAT tester) isn't keeping the time or date it probably means the backup battery has died. It's a simple fix but please note -
Taking your KT77 apart will invalidate your calibration!

Okay that's got that out of the way. Now I'll show you how to do it. You'll need the following tools:-

Cross Head screwdriver
Pointy nose pliers
Soldering iron
A new battery. 3V lithium with solder tags. I used a Panasonic CR-1220/HFN from RS (513-2837) at £2.08

You first need to remove the tester from its casing. Simply undo the four screws located in the rubber feet. Once the screws are out you can carefully turn the unit over and remove the 'guts' from the casing

Four Screws

When you've pulled it out place it face down on a clean bench. You should be able to see the battery

Board

You need to remove the aluminium base. There are 4 nuts, 2 each end.

Nuts

Once the nuts have been removed carefully unplug the ribbon cable that goes from the lower panel to the top panel then fold the aluminium base backwards. This should now reveal the board as shown below. Unplug the two plugs shown arrowed.

Board

Located at each corner of the battery board is a plastic clip. Carefully with a pointy nose pliers squeeze the clip and unclip the board.

Clips

Turn the board over. The solder pads for the battery are shown arrowed.

Battery pads

Unsolder the battery making sure the holes are clean and the tracks are not damaged.

Battery removed

Put the new battery onto the board making sure it's the correct way around. Bend the legs slightly to hold it in place and then solder.

New Battery

Reassemble the KT77 in reverse order making sure all plugs are back in the correct place and the board is securely clipped back onto the four plastic clips.Once everything is back together and back into the case replace the four screws in the feet. Turn over onto its feet, insert the power lead and plug the KT77 back in. It should go through it's startup and thendisplay the following screen.

date setting screen

Enter the new time and date and your done :-)

Usual disclaimer - if you do this and something goes wrong you are on your own! I accept no resposibility at all!!
